Reading Fees
Was talking to Lori earlier about reading fees and how they suck. What's everyone's take on them? I think if your mag needs to have another form of income to help pay the bills then you need to seriously reconsider your infrastructure.
A place where the bloggers of the Writing Popular Fiction Program at Seton Hill University can frolic in their insanity!

Well, I'm answering this now, while I'm on hold with Symantec because they are jerks and didn't send me all that I ordered in hard copy (not to mention they trick you into upgrading instead of just renewing the subscription). Sorry, just a tad frustrated. More frustrated now after talking to a person...
Anyway, I think every reading fee should be assessed individually. It's important to know if it's for a decent publication or contest. And then you decide if the cost is worth it for you.
Magazines are not cheap to produce, and especially if it is a contest where they have a cash prize, I can understand why they do reading fees. Think about it, not many people subscribe to fiction magazines and such - they have TV now instead.
